Welcome to African and African American Studies in the new School of Social Transformation.  We are in the midst of an exciting transformative moment that challenges us to think carefully about the complexities of race/ethnicity, gender/sexuality, class, and social and economic justice.  We have for the first time in our history an African American President who is endeavoring to lead us towards economic recovery, while trying to resolve the health care crisis in America in the midst of fighting two wars in other parts of the world.

Deeply cognizant of these and other critical issues our new school brings together the strengths of four established units at ASU: African and African American Studies, Asian Pacific American Studies, Justice and Social Inquiry, and Women and Gender Studies.  Together we will work to create and advance new knowledge that will challenge conventional thinking about critical topics and struggles.  We seek to connect the processes of critical inquiry and discovery, to innovation and transformation to inform our mission of teaching and scholarship.  Our new School of Social Transformation provides us with a platform for collaborative teaching and research that can only enhance our ability to create new knowledge and our capacity for social innovation as we engage with others to make ours a better world.
